‘Never judge a book for its cover’ is a big lesson that we mention a lot of times for people who want to adopt a pet. Yet, time and again, people would glance at Sully, a 5-month-old Pittie, and instantly label him as a “mean, aggressive bully.” They avoided him like he was some kind of threat, refusing to see past his appearance.

But all they needed was five minutes—just five minutes! If they had taken that time to get to know him, they would have seen the sweet soul behind those misunderstood eyes.

Instead, Sully spent day after day in a tiny cage that felt more like a prison cell. Every night, he closed his eyes, hoping that someone would finally see him for who he really was—a gentle, loving pup desperate for a home.

Then, one miraculous day, someone did see him. And that person would change Sully’s life forever.

A Long, Lonely Wait

For months, Sully struggled at the shelter, his spirit fading with each passing day. Julia Correll, a volunteer with Desert Dog Project, couldn’t bear to see him suffering any longer. The rescue helps shelter dogs who are in desperate need of medical care and a loving foster home.

When Julia first laid eyes on Sully during her volunteer work at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control in Arizona, she was heartbroken. The dog’s eyes told a story of deep sorrow that Julia couldn’t ignore. Formerly known as Gindo, Sully had been living in a cramped kennel, battling severe arthritis that made even the shortest walk a painful ordeal.

He was picked up as a stray, alongside a litter of puppies and a female dog. The others were quickly adopted, leaving Sully alone and forgotten.

His rough life had taken a toll on his body, making him look much older than his five years.

“Gindo has been waiting over 3 months at the shelter… He has severe arthritis and struggles to walk even a few feet. The pup was found as a stray and is estimated to be about 5 but he appears much older. He is skinny and covered in sores and scabs,” Julia shared in a heartfelt Facebook post.

Julia couldn’t understand why people found Sully so intimidating. He was the friendliest, most affectionate Pittie she had ever met, yet no one seemed to want him.

“He is the most gentle, affectionate, loving dog. His favorite thing is sitting in your lap and rolling over for belly rubs. He isn’t fazed by anyone or anything. He is truly such a lover,” Julia added.

Determined to give Sully a second chance, Julia began taking him out on daily outings. They would visit the park and spend hours there, lying on a soft blanket and enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

In no time, a beautiful bond formed between them, a bond that meant one thing—Sully had finally found his hero, and her name was Julia.

Finding His Forever Home

What started as a foster trial quickly blossomed into something more. Within a few short months, Sully had captured Julia’s heart in a way she never expected.

He was just the easiest foster dog she had ever cared for, despite taking six months to fully adjust to life in a home.

“He is seriously the easiest foster dog I have ever had,” Julia confessed on Instagram.

Julia got Sully his very own stroller, which he adored. This allowed him to join her on every outing without worrying about his painful condition. They would stroll through the city, take little adventures, and discover new joys like making new friends. For the first time in his life, Sully was living the way he had always dreamed.

All this time, Sully had been a people-oriented dog—he just needed someone to recognize that. And Julia did, from the moment she met him.

To prevent further damage to his worn-out elbows, Julia went above and beyond. She got him custom braces and ensured he received joint injections, acupuncture treatments, and physical therapy.

Her dedication allowed Sully to live a life as close to normal as possible.

As if all of that wasn’t enough, Julia surprised Sully with the best gift he could have ever wished for—a new dog sibling!

When she adopted another dog named Effie, Sully’s excitement was beyond words. He immediately took on the role of her protector, treating her with gentle care and endless affection.

After all the hardships he had endured, Sully finally found a family to call his own. And this time, he wouldn’t be forced to leave. He would spend the rest of his days on new adventures, basking in the Arizona sun with the best family in the world.
