Couple Holds Last-Minute Wedding at Vet’s Office So Their Beloved Dog Can Attend One Last Time

Cat Kukla’s connection with Bear, her loyal dog, began years ago when she adopted him from a shelter as a child. Now 17 years old, Bear has been with her through every stage of life. But there was one cherished moment she still wanted to share with him—her wedding.

“I never dreamed of a big, fairytale wedding,” Cat admitted. “But I always imagined Bear being part of it, riding in a little red wagon.”

In 2011, she met Jimmy, who instantly bonded with Bear. Jimmy would even bring Bear along when visiting Cat at college, turning the pup into an essential part of their growing love story. As the years passed, the couple hoped Bear would live long enough to witness their vows.

Bear’s Health Takes a Turn

Just one week before their planned ceremony, Bear’s health rapidly declined. Deeply worried, Cat approached Jimmy with a new idea.

She asked if they could move the wedding to the animal hospital where Bear was receiving care. Without hesitation, Jimmy agreed, saying he would marry her anywhere.

The staff at VCA Veterinary Emergency Service & Veterinary Specialty Center welcomed the idea. Friends and relatives helped make the quick switch possible so Bear could be with them on their special day.

A Special Wedding at the Vet

Despite being tired and weak, Bear was brought into the room on a wagon and placed near a portrait that looked remarkably like him.

That spot became the location for the couple’s intimate ceremony. Bear stayed alert throughout, watching his parents make their lifelong commitment.

After the ceremony, something unexpected happened—Bear stood up and walked outside. It was the first time he had moved around in days, and his energy gave everyone a moment of joy and hope.

A Love That Knows No Bounds

A week later, the couple held their originally planned wedding. Still, the smaller celebration with Bear remained the most meaningful to them. That moment, shared in a vet clinic surrounded by love, was irreplaceable.

Though Bear’s condition has since worsened again, Cat and Jimmy continue to care for him with all the love in their hearts. If given the chance, they would do it all over again, just to have Bear by their side.

“All the stress of planning didn’t matter,” Cat said. “The only thing that truly counted was having Bear there with us when we said ‘I do.’”
