The morning sun had barely broken through the haze in Orange County when volunteer rescuer Mary Nakiso spotted something that made her heart drop.

Along the shoulder of a busy road, a large shape trembled in the dust — a dog, massive yet shrinking into himself as cars sped by. She hit the brakes without a second thought.

A Scared Giant Left Behind

When she stepped out of her car, her breath caught. The dog towered over most others she’d rescued — close to seventy-five pounds of tangled fur and fear.

His eyes darted in every direction, pleading but unsure whether to run or trust. Every inch of him seemed to shake from confusion.

Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, later shared what Nakiso soon learned: the poor dog hadn’t wandered there on his own.

He had been abandoned, tossed from a vehicle just moments before she arrived.

Someone had literally thrown him out.

Witnesses saw the terrified dog — later named Benji — stumble into the street, spinning in panic as cars honked and swerved. A jeep with enormous tires missed him by mere inches. Somehow, against all odds, he survived the chaos and bolted down the road, disappearing into a maze of neighborhoods.

The Search for Benji

Mary quickly called Suzette, her longtime friend and partner in rescue. Together, they began tracking social media pages and local lost-and-found pet groups, hoping for any hint of the frightened dog. Hours ticked by with no luck.

Then a message appeared in one neighborhood group: someone had seen a “huge, matted dog running back and forth” near a nearby park. It had to be him.

Suzette jumped into her car, desperate to reach the location — but traffic in Southern California had other plans. Stuck on the highway, she called for backup.

Suzette stayed glued to her phone, receiving live updates every few seconds. Then, finally, came the message that made her eyes fill with tears:

“We got him.”

The team had guided Benji into a nearby yard and gently closed the gate behind him. After hours of fear and confusion, the lost dog was finally safe.

A New Beginning for Benji

In just a few days, he’ll move into a foster home where he can rest, heal, and finally learn what safety feels like.

The road ahead is filled with love — and this time, it’s one he’ll never have to walk alone.

Suzette still marvels at how far he’s come. “Benji is the sweetest, most loving dog I have ever met,” she said. “He’s truly a miracle.”
