Husky Who Escaped Through Shelter Roof Finds Her Forever Home After Long Wait

In March of 2023, the folks at Adams County Pet Rescue (ACPR) welcomed a red husky found wandering the streets of Othello, Washington. The staff quickly realized that Luna, as she was soon named, had once belonged to a family. They hoped her owners would come forward to claim her in the following days, but sadly, no one did.

The shelter team placed Luna in a kennel, adding her to the list of shelter residents. It didn’t take long for her to make an impression. Just 10 days after her arrival, Luna managed to escape from her crate, ending up on the roof of the shelter.

“It’s happened again, except this time it’s a Husky on the roof!” ACPR posted on Facebook. “Maybe Luna’s climbing skills are the reason her owner decided not to pick her up.”

Luna Finds Her Confidence

Luna stood on the roof, scanning for the family she once knew. Her caregivers rushed to her side as soon as they spotted her, safely luring the brave Husky inside. The staff, relieved and fond of her, promised to find her a loving home away from the chaotic shelter.

In the months that followed, Luna completed dog training courses and formed friendships with other dogs at the shelter. Her trust in others grew, and though she was beloved by the staff, no one came forward to adopt her.

As time passed, Luna became one of ACPR’s longest residents—but also one of their sweetest, with the potential to be an amazing family member. So, when the shelter partnered with the Ahtanum View Reentry Center in Yakima to create a fostering program, Luna was the first dog they thought of.

“Today, Luna was chosen, and she is going to be perfect for the first dog because she’s outgoing and very friendly,” ACPR shared in a Facebook update.

After over a year in the shelter and a failed rooftop escape, Luna finally found the home she had longed for. She was thrilled to meet Brianna and Justin, the coordinators of the foster program, and the rest of her temporary family.

Luna quickly adapted to her new environment, stealing hearts with her sweet and laid-back demeanor. Brianna shared her joy in a Facebook post: “She is seriously the chillest Husky I have ever seen, and I don’t know how she had been at the shelter for over a year. She is the biggest sweetheart, and everyone adores her!”

Now, a few weeks into her foster home, Luna is loving every moment of her new life. When she’s not napping with her legs against the wall, she’s enjoying delicious treats or cuddling up with her foster family.

Though ACPR still hopes to find Luna her forever home, they are grateful she is now in a warm, cozy environment with no more desire to climb onto the roof.
