Missouri Man Accused Of Smothering And Punching Three Cats In Disturbing Case — And The Details Are Shocking

A disturbing animal cruelty case in St. Louis is now moving through the court system.

Authorities say three cats and one dog are safe after being removed from a home in the city’s Bevo neighborhood.

According to reporting from Fox2Now, 22 year old Joseph Mogg appeared in court after being charged with multiple offenses related to alleged abuse inside his residence on the 4000 block of Schiller Place.

Court documents filed by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department outline a series of incidents that allegedly occurred over two separate dates in late January and early February.

Allegations Involving Three Cats

Police state that on January 26, Mogg allegedly smothered a gray Maine Coon cat named Ghost with a plastic grocery bag and struck the cat multiple times.

Investigators reported that the incident was recorded on video.

Just days later, on February 4, authorities allege additional acts involving two other cats in the home.

According to the probable cause statement, a gray domestic shorthair cat named Milo was allegedly thrown against a wall and had his head struck against it before being punched several times.

That same day, an orange tabby named Cheddar Bob was also allegedly punched multiple times, according to police documents.

These specific details have shaken many animal lovers in the area.

Each cat was named in court records, which makes the case feel deeply personal rather than abstract.

The situation escalated on February 6, when officers served an animal control warrant at the residence.

Authorities reported that the front door was left ajar when they arrived. Officers entered the home and located Mogg inside.

According to the probable cause statement, he allegedly told officers he knew why they were there and admitted to striking one of the animals and being involved in abusing the others.

By the time officers entered the home, the animals had already been removed.

A witness at the scene told police that three cats and one dog had been taken roughly an hour earlier and were in the care of the Humane Society of Missouri.

Police later confirmed the animals were at the Humane Society’s St. Louis headquarters on Macklind Avenue.

Authorities reported that the animals were suffering from dehydration, undernourishment, and flea infestations at the time they were received into care.

Charges Filed Under Missouri Law

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office has charged Mogg with three counts of second degree animal abuse and one count of animal neglect or abandonment.

Under Missouri law, second degree animal abuse generally involves knowingly causing injury or suffering to an animal, while neglect or abandonment involves failing to provide adequate care or leaving an animal without proper provisions.

As of the most recent update, Mogg remains jailed without bond.

For animal advocates, cases like this are difficult to process. But there is one important outcome that offers some reassurance.

The cats and dog are no longer in that home.

They are now under the care of trained professionals who can address their medical needs and monitor their recovery.

While details about their long term prognosis have not yet been released, the Humane Society of Missouri provides veterinary services, rehabilitation, and ongoing care for animals removed from neglect or abuse situations.

This case will now proceed through the legal system.

As it unfolds, many in the community will continue to watch closely.

Most of all, people will be hoping that Ghost, Milo, Cheddar Bob, and the unnamed dog are given the opportunity to heal and move toward safer futures.
