Dorothea’s story recently left Phoenix residents shocked and heartbroken.

This 10-year-old Chi mix found herself stranded on a shopping cart in a perilous canal, exhausted and clinging to life. Shocked, frightened, and with no escape, she held onto the cart tightly, hoping for a miracle.

Thankfully, the Phoenix Fire Department and the Arizona Humane Society Field Team responded immediately to the call!

Dorothea’s Rescue

A concerned passerby noticed something unusual floating in the middle of the canal. Upon closer inspection, they realized it was breathing—and it wasn’t an object at all.

It was Dorothea, strangely trapped in a shopping cart with no one nearby to help her.

The passerby immediately called for help, and soon, teams from the Arizona Humane Society and the Phoenix Fire Department arrived. Medical technician Hunter Stribling and his team worked swiftly, knowing time was critical.

They used a ladder to reach the terrified dog, who seemed frozen in fear.

Thankfully, the rescue was successful, and Dorothea’s paws finally touched solid ground. Stribling and his team couldn’t have been more relieved!

“Miracles do happen! 🥹🙏 We are beyond grateful for the quick actions of our incredible Field Team and the Phoenix Fire Department who worked together to give this sweet pup a second chance at life,” Arizona Humane Society shared in an Instagram video.

Dorothea’s miraculous rescue quickly captured national attention, showcasing the tireless efforts of AHS to save dogs in need.

A Happy Ending

The senior pup was immediately taken to the hospital for a thorough check-up.

Aside from dehydration, ticks, and the smell of canal water, Dorothea had a couple of fractured teeth but was otherwise in good health.

Soon, she settled into the AHS facility, adjusting to a safe and loving environment. Despite her senior years, it didn’t take long for this sweet dog to charm everyone with her adorable and lively spirit!

After completing her treatment, Dorothea’s loving nature shone through, winning the hearts of all the staff.

“Throughout her month of treatment at the shelter (including a spa day with AHS’ groomer), Dorothea was found to be a sweet, loving girl who enjoyed cuddles and attention from humans,” AHS shared on their website.

Just days later, another heartwarming update thrilled her rescuers.

It turns out adopters reached out to the shelter, eager to offer Dorothea a loving home. Her affectionate nature and her ability to be an excellent companion made her an ideal match for a new family.

From now on, Dorothea will enjoy rolling in the grass, going on daily walks, and embarking on endless adventures with her new family.

She will now spend her golden years in the care she deserves, far from the dangers she faced in the past.
