While taking a walk alongside a canal, a man spotted something unusual near a bench. At first glance, it appeared to be a heap of old cloth, but upon closer inspection, he discovered it was actually a dog trapped beneath severely tangled and knotted fur.

The poor animal lay motionless, seemingly unable to move and overwhelmed by exhaustion. Concerned, the man brought the dog home and promptly sought veterinary help. Eventually, the dog was transferred to the compassionate care of the RSPCA.

A Terrifying Discovery

Ryan King, an inspector with the RSPCA, recalled, “When Morris was found resting next to the canal bench, he was completely still. At first, it appeared he might have passed away.”

“But with closer attention, it was clear he was breathing, though his dense and matted coat had made movement impossible and left him scared and vulnerable.”

Due to advanced cataracts, Morris had lost vision in one eye, while the other was also severely impaired. Sadly, veterinary efforts could not restore his eyesight.

The combination of blindness and his heavily matted fur kept Morris stranded by the canal, hoping a kind stranger would come to his aid.

Rescue and Healing Process

“At the animal hospital, staff carefully shaved off more than 1 kilogram of tangled fur — roughly 10% of his total body weight,” explained King. “This excessive matting was causing him discomfort and preventing any movement.”

Once freed from the heavy coat, Morris began feeling relief and soon started to show remarkable progress in his recovery.

Under the watchful care of the RSPCA team, Morris’s healing journey continued over several months until he was ready to find a forever home.

A New Beginning for Morris

Josephine Newhall, who adopted Morris, shared, “We were aware of his blindness when he came to us, but my home is well adapted for him. He can safely navigate the garden, so it doesn’t pose a problem.”

Later, it was discovered that Morris is also deaf — yet none of these challenges stop him from enjoying a joyful life.

Morris has flourished in his new environment and even has a special companion — Ruby, the dog owned by Josephine’s daughter. From a place of helplessness, he has found comfort, love, and purpose.

“He’s a wonderful companion,” said Newhall. “Considering all he’s endured, it’s truly amazing that he’s here with us today.”
