Senior Dog Can’t Climb Stairs, So His Family Sleeps Beside Him Every Night

When Catherine Morris’ family welcomed Spike into their home nearly a decade ago, they believed they could set boundaries.

Their plan was simple: Spike would stay downstairs at night while the rest of the family rested upstairs.

But Spike, a lively English springer spaniel with his own opinions, wasn’t about to follow that rule.

A Dog Who Refused To Sleep Alone

On his very first night, the family shut the stair gate and expected him to settle.

Instead, Spike let out a few cries, gathered his courage, and leapt right over the barrier. Without hesitation, he padded down the hall and climbed into the bed beside Catherine’s parents.

From that moment forward, his mind was made up — bedtime meant being close to the people he loved.

During the day, Spike was a whirlwind of joy.

He chased tennis balls across the yard, sprinted with boundless energy, and lived every moment with enthusiasm.

But when the sun went down, he sought comfort. His greatest happiness came from curling up under the covers, pressing himself close, as if making sure his family never forgot how much he loved them.

Hardship In Old Age

Years have passed, and Spike is no longer the playful youngster who once bounded up the stairs. At fourteen, his body has grown weaker.

Catherine and her parents feared the worst after Spike suffered not one, but two strokes.

The family held their breath, worried they might lose him, but their devoted dog refused to give in.

The second stroke left him unable to stand, and for days, he relied entirely on his humans.

They carried him gently from room to room, never leaving his side, speaking softly to remind him that he was safe.

Though fragile, Spike’s determination was unshakable. Slowly, step by step, he learned to walk again.

Even with his progress, climbing stairs remained too risky.

His family, knowing his stubborn devotion to bedtime cuddles, blocked the staircase with a gate. They feared that if he tried to reach their bedroom, his weakened legs might betray him.

It was heartbreaking to think of him lying downstairs alone, away from the spot he had cherished for so many years.

But the family’s love for Spike found a new solution.

A Family’s Promise Of Love

To keep him safe yet never lonely, the family created a nightly routine.

They set up a pull-out couch downstairs, and each night, someone joins Spike so he will not feel left behind.

Catherine’s parents first began the rotation while she was away at school, alternating nights to make sure their old boy always had company.

When Catherine moved back home, she joined the schedule, allowing them all to share the responsibility — and the gift of time with Spike.

CATHERINE MORRIS

Spike’s father has built a particularly tender bond with him. He calls his aging pup “old bean” and talks to him as though they share secrets only they can understand.

He brings food and water directly to the sofa, often feeding Spike by hand to ensure he takes his medicine and keeps his strength.

It is a small act of care that speaks volumes about their relationship — one built on trust, patience, and unwavering love.

Though Spike can no longer leap over gates or race for tennis balls, his family continues to shape their lives around his comfort.

CATHERINE MORRIS

Every decision shows how deeply they value him, not just as a pet, but as a beloved member of their home.

For Spike, the greatest joy is not found in his old adventures but in the quiet assurance that he is never alone.

Catherine summed it up best when she reflected on the years they have shared: they are grateful to have been able to give him the love he always deserved.

His beginning in life may not have been easy, but his final years are filled with gentleness, warmth, and care.

Spike is proof that family is not just about who you live with, but about who you choose to love unconditionally — day after day, night after night.
