This Sphynx Kitten Was Deemed Scary And Faced Euthanasia Until The Impossible Happened

When Lucy was born, she didn’t exactly fit the picture of a cute, cuddly kitten.

Hairless, wide-eyed, and with an unusually shaped head, she was labelled “ugly” by strangers online.

Some even said she looked terrifying.

But underneath her unusual appearance was a medical condition that most people didn’t understand, and it nearly cost her life.

Lucy was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a rare disorder also known as “water on the brain.” It causes fluid to build up inside the skull, putting pressure on the brain.

It’s serious, painful, and often fatal in animals. Many kittens born with it don’t get a second glance.

For Lucy, it meant one thing: no one wanted her.

Her breeder posted pictures of her littermates, all of them healthy, playful, and hairless like her.

But Lucy wasn’t up for sale. The vet had taken one look and advised against keeping her alive.

The prognosis didn’t look good. She couldn’t eat properly, couldn’t control her bowels, and cried nonstop.

She was days away from being put down.

But then, something unexpected happened.

A woman named Zilla Bergamini saw Lucy’s photo. She wasn’t a stranger to cats, she already had two rescues but something about Lucy stopped her mid-scroll.

While others saw a problem, she saw potential. And she wasn’t about to let this kitten disappear without a fight.

Zilla offered to adopt her.

It wasn’t a small ask. Taking care of a special needs cat means vet visits, medication, unpredictable emergencies, and a whole lot of time and money.

But Zilla wasn’t just interested, she was all in.

She started doing research, reached out to a neurologist, and even launched a fundraiser to help cover Lucy’s treatment.

The breeder agreed. Lucy got her second chance.

The early days weren’t easy. Lucy cried around the clock.

Her eyes constantly leaked and had to be cleaned and medicated every single day.

Her digestive issues were all over the place, sometimes no bowel movement for a week, other times two straight weeks of diarrhea.

There were diapers involved. There were late nights. But Zilla didn’t give up.

She adjusted Lucy’s diet. She kept track of every symptom. She learned everything she could about her condition. And slowly, things started to change.

Lucy’s digestion stabilized. Her personality started to show.

A visit to a specialist revealed that the shape of her skull was irritating her eyes, something that could be fixed.

After a successful procedure, Lucy no longer needed the daily drops.

Her health began to improve dramatically.

Now, Lucy isn’t just surviving. She’s living.

She loves birdwatching from the window, chasing toys, and sunbathing in warm spots around the house.

She still wears diapers, and Zilla still has to watch her closely to make sure she doesn’t bump her head.

But that hasn’t stopped Lucy from enjoying life.

She even goes out for strolls in a red baby stroller. No joke.

And those people who once called her scary? They usually change their minds the second they meet her.

Lucy is now playful, affectionate, and full of life. What started as a sad story about a rejected kitten is now something else entirely.

She’s not scary. She’s a fighter.

And thanks to one woman who refused to give up on her, she’s got a life full of love, naps, and birdwatching ahead of her.

Not bad for a kitten the world almost gave up on.
