When Mareen Ebelt first heard about a stray kitten hanging around her friend’s yard, she didn’t think much of it.
But then her friend said something that stopped her in her tracks, one of the kittens was walking on just two legs.
At first, Mareen and her boyfriend didn’t believe it. How could a kitten walk on two legs?
Was it injured? Missing something?
Surely her friend was mistaken. But when they arrived to see the kitten for themselves, any doubts disappeared.
There he was. A tiny, fluffy kitten, wobbling around like he owned the place on just his two front legs.

There were no wounds. No signs of an accident or illness.
He simply didn’t have any back legs.
“It was hard to believe,” Mareen shared later. “He didn’t seem hurt. He wasn’t limping or struggling. He just… got on with it.”
Realizing that the little guy wouldn’t survive long on the streets, Mareen did what any animal lover would do.
She scooped him up and took him straight to the vet.
The staff there were just as surprised. After examining him thoroughly, they confirmed something unusual.
The kitten hadn’t lost his back legs. He was born without them.

No one could say exactly why. Maybe a rare genetic condition.
Maybe something went wrong during development. But one thing was clear, this kitten wasn’t in pain, and he wasn’t slowing down.
In fact, he was moving with more energy than anyone expected.
Despite having no hind legs, the kitten was full of life.

Mareen and her boyfriend quickly bonded with him. It didn’t take long before they decided to bring him home permanently.

He figured out how to jump, how to play, and even how to climb up on the furniture just like any other cat.
Mareen couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
“He was fast, clever, and totally fearless,” she said. “It was like he never knew he was any different.”
Rocket also met his new siblings, Flint and Gurkchen, the couple’s two other cats. There was no drama, no hissing.
Rocket seemed to charm them instantly. The three cats became fast friends, curling up for naps and chasing each other around the house.
Nine years later, Rocket is still going strong. He’s grown into a confident, agile cat who moves with purpose.
He jumps up onto tables, runs from room to room, and balances like a pro.
Watching him, you might forget he only has two legs at all.

“He takes his nap time very seriously,” Mareen said. “I think he believes it’s a professional sport.”
Rocket’s favorite spot is a pillow perched on the windowsill.
It’s the perfect place to relax and watch the world go by or, more likely, to doze off in a patch of sun.

Mareen says Rocket has taught her a lot over the years. Not just about animals, but about resilience and determination.
She gave him a second chance at life, but in return, he gave her something too.
“He’s made us laugh, amazed us, and reminded us what’s possible when you don’t let anything hold you back,” she said.
Rocket may walk a little differently, but he’s never let that stop him from living life to the fullest.
