1939 Lagonda LG6 Rapide Drophead Coupe

Powered by a 4,453cc OHV inline six-cylinder engine with twin SU carburetors producing 140 bhp, this grand tourer combined impressive power with elegant styling. Developed under W.O. Bentley’s technical direction, the LG6 featured advanced engineering including independent front suspension with torsion bars and a diagonally cross-braced chassis. The bodywork, designed by the talented Frank Feeley, showcased flowing lines with semi-aerodynamic wings and curved rear wheel spats.

Only six long-wheelbase LG6 Rapides were built before production ceased due to World War II, making this model exceptionally rare. Contemporary road tests praised its remarkable handling, describing it as “almost uncannily easy to take around bends at high speeds” while maintaining passenger comfort. With a top speed exceeding 100 mph, the LG6 Rapide delivered exhilarating performance wrapped in sophisticated luxury, creating what period magazine The Motor aptly called “a perfect combination of pure beauty and speed.”
