1961 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe
Pillarless hardtop construction and expansive glass created the distinctive “Bubbletop” roofline that made this Sport Coupe one of the most recognizable Chevrolets of the early 1960s.
The third-generation redesign marked a significant styling departure, eliminating the tail fins of previous years in favor of cleaner lines and a more refined profile. Large window areas and uninterrupted roof contours gave the two-door hardtop an airy, modern appearance that aligned with changing automotive tastes.
Chevrolet provided multiple engine choices for 1961, starting with a 283 cubic inch V8 producing 170 horsepower. Buyers could also opt for higher-output versions of the 283, while performance-minded customers could specify a 348 cubic inch V8 in several configurations ranging from 250 to 340 horsepower.
Midway through the model year, Chevrolet introduced the legendary 409 cubic inch V8, rated at 360 horsepower in single four-barrel form, with an even hotter dual four-barrel version available later in the year. Transmission options included three-speed and four-speed manual gearboxes, along with the Powerglide automatic.
The new Super Sport package debuted for 1961 and was closely associated with high-performance drivetrains. Well-preserved examples equipped with the 409 engine and a four-speed transmission command strong collector interest today.
