1944 Volkswagen Type 82 ‘Kübelwagen’

Developed from Ferdinand Porsche’s original Volkswagen design, this rugged utility vehicle served the German military across nearly every front during World War II. Featuring an air-cooled 1,121cc flat four-cylinder engine producing 25 horsepower, the Kübelwagen offered practical performance and notable durability in harsh conditions. Later models from 1943 onward received the enlarged engine from the amphibious Schwimmwagen variant, providing a modest increase in power and torque.

The vehicle’s engineering brilliance became apparent through its innovative fully independent torsion bar suspension and backbone chassis, which allowed impressive cross-country capability despite modest ground clearance. With its pragmatic design and functional simplicity, the Kübelwagen established a utilitarian template that would later influence civilian vehicles like the post-war VW “Thing.” Though born from conflict, this vehicle demonstrates how Porsche’s early work with the flat-four platform would evolve into more refined applications after the war.
