1977 Ferrari 308 GTB ‘Vetroresina’

Pininfarina’s wedge-shaped replacement for the Dino 246 debuted at the 1975 Paris Motor Show with a distinction no other production Ferrari had achieved: an entirely fiberglass body.

Built by Scaglietti with only an aluminum hood, these early Vetroresina examples weighed just 2,315 pounds (1,050 kg). Pop-up headlamps, scalloped door intakes, and twin circular taillights defined the aerodynamic profile developed in Pininfarina’s wind tunnel.

A transversely mounted 2.9-liter V8 with dual overhead camshafts per bank, fed by four Weber 40DCNF carburetors, produced 255 horsepower in European specification.

European models featured dry-sump lubrication, while US-market cars retained wet-sump systems and lower output to meet emissions requirements. Power reached the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.

Ferrari produced 808 fiberglass-bodied examples between 1975 and mid-1977, when production switched to steel construction. The change added weight but addressed concerns about fiberglass panel finish and durability.

Approximately 100 Vetroresina examples were built for the North American market, making these lightweight variants increasingly sought after by collectors.
