When Roman Smith was just 9 years old, a tiny kitten named Gandalf — lovingly called “Gannie” — entered his life. From that day in 2003, the two were inseparable.
Through every stage of growing up — childhood, teenage struggles, even big adult decisions — Gandalf was always there. Roman woke up each morning with his best friend curled by his side, purring as if to say, *“I’ve got you.”*
Gannie wasn’t just sweet — he was bold. Despite sharing a home with big dogs and other cats, he proudly ruled the house. Yet, the moment someone reached out to pet him, he melted into affection.
As the years passed and Gandalf grew older, he slowed down but stayed closer than ever. He kept Roman company during late-night video games, demanded food with fiery meows when dinner was late, and filled every room with his warm presence.
After two decades together, Gandalf’s journey came to an end. Before saying goodbye, Roman put on an orange shirt — the same color as in their very first picture together — and recreated the moment from 20 years earlier. That photo now serves as a powerful reminder of a once-in-a-lifetime bond.
Though Gandalf is gone, his love will always live in Roman’s heart.
