1949 DeSoto Custom Convertible

The 1949 DeSoto Custom Convertible was part of Chrysler’s first complete post-war redesign. Priced at $2,445 when new, this scarce drop-top was one of just 3,385 units produced. Its 237 cubic-inch inline six-cylinder engine got a power increase to 112 horsepower thanks to a new cylinder head. The Custom came standard with a four-speed automatic Fluid Drive transmission featuring Tip-Top hydraulic shifting. The car’s design introduced subtle rear fender flares housing taillightsβ€”early precursors to Chrysler’s famous tailfins of the 1950s. Its 125.5-inch wheelbase provided a stable ride, while the shorter overhangs made the car appear ready for action despite its substantial size.
