1964 Plymouth Savoy Lightweight
Introduced in 1964, this remarkable drag racing machine was developed during the heated “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday” era when major automakers competed for dominance on America’s quarter-mile strips. The Savoy Lightweight featured the powerful code-A864 Hemi engine producing 425 horsepower with 12.5:1 compression ratio, transistor ignition, and offset Holley 4-barrel carburetors on a cross-ram intake. The car used a TorqueFlite automatic transmission paired with independent front suspension and live rear axle, all brought to a stop by 4-wheel drum brakes.
Plymouth created approximately 55 examples of these factory lightweight cars, making them among the most coveted Mopar race vehicles. Their aluminum front-end components (fenders, hood, scoop, and bumper) significantly reduced weight for improved acceleration. These specialized drag racers left an indelible mark on American motorsport history and remain highly prized collector vehicles today.
