𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐎𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲: 1948 Davis Divan 🤔

Let’s talk about the 1948 Davis Divan – a car that looks like it rolled straight out of a 1940s sci-fi comic book. This bizarre three-wheeler was essentially what happens when a used car salesman has a fever dream about the future of transportation.

Created by Glen Gordon “Gary” Davis (who probably could’ve sold ice to penguins), this aluminum-bodied oddity promised to seat four adults side-by-side, which is a bit like claiming you can fit an elephant in a phone booth. Its streamlined body and single rear wheel made it look like a brown metallic submarine on wheels, or perhaps what you’d get if you asked a 3-year old to draw a car.

The Divan’s story ended about as well as you’d expect for a venture launched by an overly optimistic used car salesman – with fraud charges and a shuttered company. Only a dozen of these automotive curiosities still exist, making them incredibly rare examples of post-war American optimism gone wonderfully wrong. Think of it as the Tucker’s quirky cousin who nobody talks about at family reunions.
