1959 Chevrolet El Camino

Born as Chevrolet’s answer to Ford’s Ranchero, this innovative fusion of car and truck arrived in 1959 with dramatic styling. The first-year model was marketed as “more than a car — more than a truck” with substantial capacity, carrying up to 1,150 pounds in its nearly 34-cubic-foot cargo box. Its structure featured Chevrolet’s “Safety-Girder” X-frame design with full-coil suspension on a generous 119-inch wheelbase.

The vehicle measured an impressive 211 inches in length, dominated by those signature fins and “cat’s eye” taillights. Powertrain options ranged from a 235 cubic-inch inline-six to multiple V8s, including the mighty 348 cubic-inch engine producing up to 315 horsepower. Despite selling over 22,000 units in its initial year, the original run lasted just two model years before returning in 1964 for a much longer production run.
