1957 Oldsmobile Starfire Ninety-Eight ‘J-2’ Convertible

A legendary American automobile from the performance-focused decade, the 1957 Starfire Ninety-Eight featured an entirely new body design than previous models. General Motors marketed these vehicles as “Golden Rockets” while celebrating Oldsmobile’s 60th anniversary. Despite carrying a price tag of $3,840, making it Oldsmobile’s most expensive offering, the convertible proved popular with 8,278 units produced.

The optional J-2 package transformed this luxury vehicle by replacing the standard four-barrel carburetor with three Rochester two-barrel carbs. During normal driving, only the center carburetor operated, but when drivers needed acceleration, all three engaged, generating 300 horsepower from the 371 cubic inch V8. With fewer than 750 examples equipped with this $83 option, these models represent rare examples of 1950s high-performance history.

The J-2’s racing prowess was demonstrated when Lee Petty achieved 144.9 mph at Daytona Beach, prompting NASCAR to quickly ban multi-carbureted engines after the Oldsmobile J-2 won five Grand National races. This combination of luxury features and genuine performance capacity makes the Starfire Ninety-Eight ‘J-2’ Convertible a significant historical model in American automotive development.
