1949 Oldsmobile 88 Station Wagon
September 15, 1948 marked a revolution in American automotive engineering when Oldsmobile introduced what many consider the first modern overhead valve V-8 engine. With a 7.25 to 1 compression ratio, it made 135 hp at 3,600 rpm and 263 lb/ft of torque at 1,800 rpm.
The groundbreaking Rocket V-8 transformed both the company’s fortunes and the world of NASCAR racing, where Oldsmobile captured six of nine checkered flags during the 1949 season.
The sleek Futuramic styling of the 88 station wagon complemented this mechanical innovation perfectly. Oldsmobile’s design team created flowing lines that looked genuinely forward-thinking, concurrent with introducing the industry’s first production hardtop coupe, called the Holiday.
The station wagon represented something special within the 88 series lineup. Fisher Body supplied these wagons with leather upholstery and distinctive mahogany wood paneling, giving them an upscale appearance. However, production shifted mid-year to all-steel construction, eliminating the wood trim entirely.
With only 1,355 total wagons produced, these vehicles remain quite scarce today.
