1955 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria Skyliner
Radical engineering made this ultra-rare Ford one of the most innovative American cars of the mid-1950s, featuring a transparent acrylic roof panel that provided convertible-like visibility with hardtop weather protection. Only 1,999 examples were produced in 1955, making it among the scarcest Fords ever built.
The glass roof concept debuted with the 1954 Crestline Skyliner and was continued in the 1955 Fairlane Crown Victoria Skyliner. Part of Ford’s premium Fairlane series, the Crown Victoria Skyliner paired its distinctive “greenhouse” design with a powerful 272 cubic-inch Y-block V-8 engine producing 162 horsepower.
The innovative roof design earned Ford significant attention, with advertising promoting the “freshness of view” experience. By 1956, production plummeted to just 603 units before the Skyliner name transferred to Ford’s new retractable hardtop convertible in 1957.
