1959 Facel Vega HK500 Coupé
Representing the pinnacle of French automotive luxury, this exclusive Grand Tourer combined Gallic sophistication with American V8 power in just 190 examples built during 1959.
Jean Daninos created this distinctive Franco-American hybrid after recognizing that French taxation laws made domestic luxury car production nearly impossible, leading him to source reliable Chrysler powerplants for his elegant chassis.
The 6,279cc Chrysler “wedge” V8 engine produced 360 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, enabling a remarkable 147 mph top speed and 0-60 acceleration in 8.4 seconds. This made the HK500 one of the fastest four-seat cars in the world, advertised as such while commanding a staggering $9,795 price when most luxury cars cost significantly less.
The HK500 became the first French automobile to feature standard four-wheel disc brakes, essential for controlling its substantial 3,855-pound weight at high speeds. Celebrity ownership included Hollywood stars like Ava Gardner, Tony Curtis, and Ringo Starr, while racing driver Stirling Moss preferred driving his Facel Vega between European race venues rather than flying.
