1961 Pontiac Catalina Convertible
Designed as Pontiac’s performance convertible, the 1961 Catalina Convertible was the rarer of two available Pontiac ragtops that year, with 12,379 produced.
Weighing about 100 pounds less than its larger Bonneville cousin, this “Wide Track” model featured a completely redesigned perimeter frame and all-new bodywork that marked a significant departure from the previous year’s design.
The 1961 redesign introduced squared-off bodylines, the return of Pontiac’s distinctive split grille first seen in 1959, and sculpted side panels with subtle tail fins.
Built on a 119-inch wheelbase, the Catalina featured minimal chrome trim and single horizontal-oval tail lamps with small hubcaps.
The standard engine was a 389 cubic-inch V8 producing 215 horsepower, though Pontiac offered more than 20 factory variations of the 389 V8 for 1961.
Optional dealer-installed Super Duty 421 engines were also available for serious performance enthusiasts. Most cars came equipped with the new three-speed Roto Hydramatic automatic transmission.
