1968 AMC Javelin ‘Bonneville Speed Spectacular’
The 1968 AMC Javelin marked American Motors Corporation’s bold entry into the fiercely competitive pony car segment, going head-to-head with icons like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.
Introduced for the 1968 model year, the Javelin combined aggressive styling with a range of potent engine options, appealing to young buyers and performance enthusiasts alike.
This particular 1968 AMC Javelin earned its place in racing lore by setting a C-Production class record of 161.733 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in November 1968.
The car was one of three Javelins built for AMC’s “Bonneville Speed Spectacular,” a publicity campaign co-sponsored with Car Craft Magazine that paired the new pony car with land speed record holder Craig Breedlove (the first person to reach both 500 mph and 600 mph on land).
The winning Team #2 car features a striking Red, White and Blue exterior. Under the hood sits a modified 343 cubic inch AMC V8 engine equipped with special Joe Mondello-built cylinder heads and a rare Vic Edelbrock STR-11 prototype dual 4-barrel aluminum intake manifold topped with Holley carburetors.
The drivetrain includes a 4-speed manual transmission, and various chassis modifications were made for the high-speed runs.
