1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz

With towering tailfins reaching nearly 42 inches high and rocket-inspired styling, the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz stood as Detroit’s most extravagant creation of the 1950s.

The convertible measured 225 inches long on a 130-inch wheelbase, making it longer than most of today’s full-size SUVs. For comparison, the massive 2025 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L is 226 inches long with a 130-inch wheelbase.

The dramatic design emerged from intense competition with Chrysler’s “Forward Look” styling, prompting GM’s design team to create the most outrageous fins possible. Aircraft influence was obvious, with styling cues reminiscent of the P-38 Lightning fighter and B-52 bomber. The result was a chrome-laden masterpiece that defined an era.

Despite Cadillac building 121,778 automobiles in 1959, only 1,320 were Eldorado Biarritz convertibles, representing about one percent of production. The exclusive $7,401 price tag contributed to this rarity, equivalent to roughly $77,000 today.

Power came from a 345-horsepower, 390-cubic-inch V8 with three two-barrel carburetors, paired with a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Standard equipment included power everything, air suspension, and luxury appointments that made this the ultimate American dream machine.
