1958 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Convertible

General Motors designed what became known as the “ChromeMobile” for 1958, with extensive chrome trim covering virtually every surface. Only 4,456 Dynamic 88 convertibles rolled off production lines that year, carrying a $2,931 price tag.

The complete exterior redesign featured massive front and rear bumper assemblies, with the rear incorporating Harley Earl’s jet exhaust-inspired taillamps that defined the era’s space-age aesthetic.

Horizontal chrome strakes extended from the mid-rear sections to the large chrome taillight bezels, while a full-width horizontal bar grille replaced the previous year’s elliptical design.

This styling approach was marketed as the “Linear Look” and represented a dramatic departure from earlier Oldsmobile design themes.

Power came from a 371 cubic inch Golden Rocket V8 with a standard two-barrel carburetor producing 265 horsepower. Optional equipment included the J-2 package with three two-barrel Rochester carburetors that boosted output to 312 horsepower, along with the innovative “Trans-Portable” radio that could be removed from the dashboard and used as a portable unit.
