When Pinin Farina presented the 250 GT prototype at the 1956 Geneva Salon, demand immediately outpaced what the Turin carrozzeria could produce. Production was entrusted to Carrozzeria Boano, also of Turin, before passing to Boano’s son-in-law Ezio Ellena after Boano accepted a position at Fiat as head of a new central styling department.

The Ellena version retained the front vent windows of the Boano but raised the roofline by roughly two inches for additional headroom, resulting in a quieter, more comfortable cabin (a deliberate accommodation of the increasingly important North American market).

Approximately 49 Ellena coupĂ©s were built before Pinin Farina’s expanded Grugliasco facilities took over 250 GT CoupĂ© production in 1958, making the Ellena the scarcer of the early sub-variants.

The 2,953cc Colombo V12, with a single overhead camshaft per bank and triple Weber carburetors, produced 240 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, paired with a four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox. Curb weight was approximately 2,600 pounds (1,180 kg).

Broader seats, reduced noise intrusion, and light steering separated these cars from Ferrari’s competition-focused offerings of the same period.
