1969 Pontiac GTO Judge Ram Air IV
Pontiac’s most aggressive muscle car variant emerged from the factory in 1969 wearing distinctive tri-color body stripes and “The Judge” decals.
The Judge package was introduced as a $332 option to combat budget-minded muscle cars from Ford and Plymouth, taking its name from a popular catchphrase on “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.”
Standard Judge features included a full-width rear spoiler, Rally II wheels without trim rings, and the Ram Air III engine rated at 366 horsepower.
The optional Ram Air IV upgrade delivered 370 horsepower from its 400 cubic-inch V8, featuring an aluminum intake manifold, round port cylinder heads, forged pistons, and a more aggressive camshaft.
Car and Driver recorded a quarter-mile time of 13.7 seconds at 103.6 mph with this powerplant. Air conditioning was not available with the Ram Air IV, and buyers could choose between 3.90:1 or 4.33:1 rear axle ratios.
Total 1969 production included 6,725 Judge hardtops of which only 239 had the Ram Air IV w/ 4-speed manual. Just 108 convertibles came off the assembly line.
