This owl… can’t really spin its head all the way around — but it comes surprisingly close.
The Barn Owl is famous for its eerie ability to turn its head up to about 270 degrees. That means it can look far over its shoulder without moving its body at all.
What makes it extraordinary is how it does this safely. Unlike humans, the barn owl has extra neck vertebrae (14 instead of 7) and special blood vessels that prevent blood flow from being cut off when it twists its head. This lets it scan for prey in near-total darkness while staying perfectly still.
A pale ghost of the night sky, yet a master of silent, all-seeing awareness.
