1953 Jaguar XK 120 SE Roadster

Revolutionary styling and genuine 120 mph capability made this British roadster a sensation when it debuted in 1948, officially becoming the world’s fastest production car after speed trials in Belgium.

The flowing bodywork featured sensuous curves and a long hood that established design principles still evident in sports cars today. Chrome bumpers, wire wheels, and distinctive side vents created an elegant yet purposeful appearance that influenced automotive styling for decades.

Under the lengthy hood sat Jaguar’s magnificent 3.4-liter DOHC inline-six engine, producing 160 horsepower in standard form through twin SU carburetors. This advanced powerplant featured an aluminum cylinder head and proved both reliable and tuneable for competition use. The engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a solid rear axle.

The earliest cars used ash wood framing with aluminum body panels, but production soon shifted to primarily steel construction. The Special Equipment (SE) models, like the 1953 example, featured higher-lift camshafts, wire wheels, dual exhaust, and an output of 180 horsepower.

Competition variants achieved remarkable success at Le Mans, the Mille Miglia, and other international events, proving the design’s sporting credentials. Production continued through 1954, establishing the XK 120 as one of the most significant sports cars of the postwar era.
