1954 Buick Skylark Convertible
General Motors produced only 836 examples of this ultra-exclusive convertible in 1954, making it rarer than many exotic imports of the period. At $4,483, it commanded a higher price than even Cadillac’s premium convertibles, positioning Buick as the luxury leader within GM’s hierarchy.
The dramatically restyled body featured enlarged wheel cutouts that could be painted in contrasting colors, bobbed rear fenders, and massive chrome taillight housings that created a distinctly custom appearance.
A new wraparound windshield and styling cues borrowed from Buick’s Wildcat show car gave the convertible a futuristic look that influenced the entire Buick lineup.
Unlike the previous year’s Roadmaster-based model, the 1954 version used the shorter Century chassis. Power came from Buick’s new 322 cubic inch Fireball V8 (aka: โNailheadโ) producing 200 horsepower, paired with the smooth-shifting Dynaflow automatic transmission.
Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels and virtually every available luxury option came standard, creating a factory custom car decades ahead of its time.
