1965 Pontiac Tempest LeMans GTO Convertible
Widely credited as America’s first true muscle car, this legendary machine earned nicknames like “The Goat” and “The Great One” for good reason.
Pontiac built 75,352 GTOs for 1965, of which just 11,311 were convertibles, making this body style a relatively rare sight even when new. Its aggressive stance and muscular proportions announced serious performance intentions to anyone within viewing distance.
The Montero Red paint paired with a crisp white convertible top created an unmistakably bold appearance, while Pontiac’s distinctive wire wheel covers and whitewall tires added period-correct style touches. Inside, red vinyl bucket seats complemented the exterior color scheme.
Performance came from Pontiac’s 389 cubic inch V-8, available with the optional Tri-Power setup (three two-barrel carburetors) that produced 360 horsepower, a substantial increase over the standard 335-horsepower four-barrel version. Power reached the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission that allowed drivers to fully exploit the engine’s capabilities.
Even creature comforts like a factory AM radio were available, making this convertible equally suited for weekend cruising or serious acceleration runs.
