This bird transforms dramatically during breeding season, growing golden feather plumes that glow against its dark head.

On quiet lakes and wetlands across Europe, Asia, and North America, the Black-necked Grebe glides low across the water before slipping beneath the surface in pursuit of small fish and aquatic insects. During summer, its crimson eyes and shimmering black plumage become even more striking beneath sprays of golden feathers fanning from its face.

What makes it extraordinary is its mastery of water — it builds floating nests anchored to vegetation and spends much of its life diving, feeding, and raising young among reeds and open shallows.

A jewel of still waters, yet a graceful spirit of the wetlands.
