This duck is often called the “Brahminy Duck” and is known for forming strong lifelong pairs.
Across the lakes, rivers, and open wetlands of Asia and southeastern Europe, the Ruddy Shelduck stands out with its rich orange-cinnamon body and pale head glowing in the sunlight. Unlike many waterfowl that gather in large flocks, pairs often stay close together, moving across the water with remarkable loyalty.
It feeds on grasses, seeds, aquatic plants, and small invertebrates, foraging both on land and in shallow water. Its loud, echoing calls can carry far across quiet wetlands, especially during the breeding season.
A warm flame upon still waters, yet a devoted spirit of the wetlands.
