This tiny chick already carries one of the rarest bills in the bird world.

On the fragile coastal tundras of northeastern Asia, the Spoon-billed Sandpiper chick scurries across mud and moss on impossibly small legs. Even at a young age, the beginnings of its unique spoon-shaped bill are already visible — a delicate tool that will one day help it sweep tiny prey from shallow wetlands.

What makes it extraordinary is how rare it has become. With habitat loss threatening its survival, every surviving chick represents hope for one of the world’s most endangered shorebirds. From the moment it hatches, it must quickly learn to feed, hide, and survive in a harsh landscape filled with danger.

A tiny life on the edge of extinction, yet a fragile symbol of resilience in the wild.
