1957 Oldsmobile Starfire 98 Convertible
Oldsmobile applied the prestigious Starfire name across its entire 98 lineup for the 1957 model year, making it the only time this designation appeared on hardtops and sedans alongside the traditional convertible.
This naming strategy honored the Starfire convertible introduced in 1953 while also celebrating Oldsmobile’s 50th anniversary. The cars featured a distinctive three-piece rear window design and measured 216.7 inches in length on a 126-inch wheelbase.
Standard power came from Oldsmobile’s 371 cubic inch Rocket V8 engine, producing 277 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The optional J-2 Induction system transformed performance dramatically, adding two additional two-barrel carburetors (activated by the windshield wiper motor under heavy acceleration) to boost output to 300 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Only about 2,500 Oldsmobiles received this rare option during 1957-1958.
Lee Petty proved the J-2’s capability by achieving 144.9 mph at Daytona Beach, helping Oldsmobile capture five NASCAR victories before racing authorities banned multi-carburetor engines. Standard equipment included power steering, power brakes, and electric windows, establishing the Starfire 98 as Oldsmobile’s luxury flagship.
