Imagine a spaceship from a 1930s sci-fi film that somehow learned to drive – that’s the 1934 Tatra T77. This streamlined Czech marvel, with its distinctive rear fin and submarine-like profile, looks like it escaped from the sketchbook of a daydreaming aeronautics engineer. In fact, it kind of did – a Zeppelin designer helped create its radical shape.
Lurking behind this slippery shell was a rear-mounted 3.0-liter air-cooled V8, letting the T77 glide to speeds over 90 mph while other cars were still figuring out what aerodynamics meant. Its wind-tunnel tested design achieved a drag coefficient that would make modern cars jealous. Speaking of modern cars, Ferdinand Porsche took more than a passing interest in the T77’s design – so much so that the VW Beetle ended up bearing a suspicious family resemblance.
With only 106 original T77s built and just five restored examples known today, this hand-crafted luxury car remains one of the most fascinating experiments in automotive history. It’s either a glimpse of an alternate automotive timeline or proof that sometimes the wildest designs come from the most unexpected places.
