1960 Volvo PV 544

Rally drivers appreciated the PV 544’s combination of performance and durability during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Introduced in August 1958 as an updated version of the PV 444, the 544 featured a larger curved windshield and expanded rear window for improved visibility.

The Sport variant represented the most performance‑focused model in Volvo’s lineup, distinguished by its performance-oriented specifications.

The Sport model came equipped with a 1,583cc inline four-cylinder engine fitted with twin side-draft carburetors, producing 60 horsepower. Power transferred through a four-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels.

Independent front suspension with coil springs and a live rear axle with coil springs provided the suspension setup, while four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes handled stopping duties.

Inside, the dashboard featured a padded upper section for improved safety and a distinctive horizontal “thermometer”-style speedometer with a red indicator strip displaying current speed. The PV 544 also represented Volvo’s first unitary body design and marked the company’s return to four-cylinder power following its postwar six-cylinder models.
