1974 Ford Escort 1100 (Mk1) Van
Small commercial vehicles found their perfect match in the European Ford Escort Mk1 van, a model never sold in the United States but widely used across British high streets from 1968 to 1974. This two-door van variant transformed Ford’s compact car platform into a practical workhorse for small businesses throughout the UK.
Built at Ford’s Halewood facility in Liverpool, the Escort van achieved impressive production numbers, with over one million units finding buyers during its six-year run. The majority were equipped with Ford’s dependable 1,098cc Kent overhead valve four-cylinder engine, featuring a single carburetor and five-bearing crankshaft that delivered approximately 48 horsepower (adequate for most commercial applications).
The van’s compact dimensions and rear-wheel-drive layout made it ideal for urban deliveries and light cargo duties. Despite the substantial production volume, surviving examples have become increasingly rare due to Britain’s harsh weather conditions, evolving safety regulations, and the natural attrition that affects commercial vehicles.
Production ended in December 1974 when Ford transitioned to the Mk2 generation.
