1969 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air IV
Extreme rarity defined this particular Trans Am, being one of only nine Ram Air IV examples built with an automatic transmission during 1969 production. The inaugural Trans Am package launched in March 1969 as Pontiac’s image car under John DeLorean, carrying SCCA licensing despite having no actual racing homologation purpose.
Cameo White paint with blue racing stripes created the classic Trans Am appearance, complemented by functional front and rear spoilers plus twin hood scoops and fender air extractors. The aggressive styling announced serious performance intentions while maintaining street-legal practicality.
Under the hood sat the formidable Ram Air IV 400-cubic-inch V8 rated at 345 horsepower, representing the top engine option available. The Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission and 3.90 Positraction rear axle delivered the power effectively, while heavy-duty suspension with front and rear sway bars provided handling capability.
Interior appointments included blue vinyl bucket seats, a center console with burlwood trim accents, a full Rally gauge package, and a three-spoke sport steering wheel. The $558 premium for the Ram Air IV engine reflected its exclusive nature and established the Trans Am’s position as Pontiac’s flagship performance car.
