1963 Maserati 3500 GTi Superleggera Coupe
This pillarless coupe draws inspiration from Maserati’s Formula 1 racing success, featuring a 3.5-liter DOHC inline-six derived from the same engineering lineage as the championship-winning Tipo 250F engine. In fuel-injected GTi specification, introduced in 1961, the Lucas mechanical system produced about 240 horsepower at 5,800 rpm, though some owners later converted to Weber carburetors for improved reliability.
Carrozzeria Touring styled the aluminum bodywork using their renowned Superleggera (super-light) construction method, creating a lightweight tubular framework beneath the graceful alloy panels. The design debuted at the 1957 Geneva Auto Show and remained in production through 1964, with just over 2,200 examples built across all variants.
The 3500 GT represented Maserati’s first true production grand touring car, marking the company’s transition from a racing-focused manufacturer to a builder of refined luxury GTs. The model competed directly with Ferrari’s offerings from Maranello, though 3500 GTs generally commanded lower prices both then and now.
The combination of racing-derived mechanicals and elegant Italian coachwork made this one of the most desirable and enduringly beautiful Maseratis of the early 1960s.
