1948 Diamond T 201 1-Ton Pickup
Diamond T built trucks with a reputation for quality that earned the brand its nickname as the “Cadillac of trucks.” The company’s distinctive logo originated from founder Charles A. Tilt’s family shoe business, where the diamond symbol represented quality craftsmanship.
While Tilt initially produced a small number of custom automobiles beginning in 1905, the company shifted its focus to truck manufacturing in 1911 and quickly became known for superior engineering, materials, and assembly standards.
The Model 201 one-ton pickup debuted in 1938, powered by a 236-cubic-inch Hercules QX-series inline-six engine paired with a Warner Gear four-speed manual transmission. With its heavy-duty frame, graceful styling, and car-like appointments, the 201 stood apart from typical work trucks of the era. This example represents one of just 1,379 units produced in 1948, making it relatively scarce today.
The Model 201 came equipped with features uncommon in most pickups of the period, including dual horns with a custom horn button, dual fog lamps, chromed mirrors, and both front and rear chrome bumpers. Inside, the cab offered dual armrests, sun visors, a deluxe heater, and a dome light. The chromed dashboard (sourced from the 1941 model year) housed an electric clock, jeweled cigar lighter, and a full complement of gauges for fuel, oil pressure, voltage, and temperature.
Fender-mounted parking lights, turn signals, and whitewall tires further distinguished the Model 201 from its more utilitarian competitors.
After World War II, Diamond T faced increasing competition from Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge in the light truck market. Pickup production ended in 1951 as the company shifted its focus exclusively to heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
In 1958, Diamond T merged with Reo to form Diamond Reo Trucks, marking the end of an era for one of America’s most distinctive truck builders.
