1960 Volvo PV 544 Rally Car

The PV544’s humpbacked roofline and upright greenhouse were already considered old-fashioned when the car was new; on a rally-prepped example wearing Minilite alloys, the anachronism works in its favor.

The cream and black two-tone finish sits over the compact fastback body largely as it left Gothenburg, though what’s changed is everything underneath and inside.

This is a purpose-built historic rally car, not a standard example. Power comes from a B20 2.0-liter inline-four (a later transplant over the car’s original B16) breathing through twin S.U. carburetors, paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive.

A full roll cage, four-point harnesses, VDO gauges, Sparco steering wheel, aluminum fuel tank, and spot lamps address the long-distance demands the car was built for.

Volvo produced 243,990 PV544s between 1958 and 1965, and the model’s competition credentials were well-established by 1960. Volvo had set up its own competition department by 1959, and that year Gunnar Andersson won the Gran Premio de Argentina in a PV544.
