1931 Ford Model A Phaeton
Introduced in mid-1930 for the 1931 model year, the Deluxe 2-Door Phaeton (Model 180-A) was Ford’s attempt to create a lighter, sportier open car that still offered seating for four. Unlike the more common four-door Phaeton, this model featured just two doors and a sleeker body design with lower lines, a raked windshield, and a more refined interior.
Folding canvas tops and removable side curtains provided basic weather protection, while the open design delivered the full touring experience with a sportier flair.
Power came from Ford’s dependable 200.5 cubic inch inline-four engine producing about 40 horsepower, paired with a three-speed manual transmission. The chassis used transverse leaf springs front and rear and four-wheel mechanical brakes. Weighing roughly 2,300 pounds, the 2-Door Phaeton offered lively performance for its day.
Priced around $625 when new, the Deluxe 2-Door Phaeton was one of the more exclusive body styles in the Model A lineup. Production numbers were low, with only about 2,229 units built, making it one of the rarest Model A variants. After 1931, Ford replaced the Model A with the new V-8-powered Model 18, marking the end of the Model A era.
