1965 Lotus Elan S2 Shapecraft Fastback Coupé
The Lotus Elan S2 was already celebrated for its lightweight construction and razor-sharp handling when it debuted in the mid-1960s, but a small number received an even more specialized treatment from Barry Wood’s Surbiton-based Shapecraft operation.
These conversions replaced the standard fiberglass rear section with an aluminum fastback roof bonded to the original lower body, creating a sleeker and more aerodynamic profile that quickly gained favor within the racing community.
Contemporary accounts suggested the modification could push top speed beyond 120 mph, a meaningful improvement over the standard Elan.
Only around 15 Shapecraft conversions are believed to have been completed, making surviving examples exceptionally rare. This particular S2 was purchased in April 1973 from Gibson’s Sports Cars in Christchurch, Dorset, for £695, with the buyer trading in a Mk2 Lotus Cortina. The new owner added period accessories including a vinyl roof, a Harry Moss radio, and Revolution wheels.
