1954 Hudson Italia

The Hudson Italia represented an ambitious collaboration between Detroit engineering and Italian design craftsmanship. Built on the compact Hudson Jet platform, this rare machine featured hand-formed aluminum bodywork by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, creating a dramatically different aesthetic from typical American offerings of the period. The interior included specially designed reclining front bucket seats, a distinctive feature for the mid-1950s.

Under the hood sat Hudson’s 202 cubic inch (3.3-liter) inline-six engine with twin carburetors, paired with a three-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The Italia’s production run was extraordinarily limited, with only 25 Jet-based examples produced in addition to one prototype. At a retail price of about $4,800, the Italia cost significantly more than Hudson’s mainstream models, and the company reportedly lost money on each unit sold.

Despite generating valuable publicity for Hudson (which merged with Nash-Kelvinator to form American Motors Corporation in 1954), the Italia’s high price and limited appeal prevented commercial success. Today, 21 of the 25 Jet-based Italias are known to survive, making these Italian-American hybrids highly sought after by collectors who appreciate their unique blend of international styling and American mechanical components.
