1965 Ford Galaxie 500XL Convertible

The Galaxie 500XL represented the sport-oriented trim level of Ford’s full-size Galaxie 500. It featured stacked dual headlights and a horizontal-bar grille that gave it a distinctive frontal appearance. Clean, square body lines defined the exterior, with a subtle “Coke bottle” contour at the rear.

The 1965 model introduced a new full-frame design with coil spring rear suspension, marking a significant advancement in ride quality for Ford’s full-size lineup.

Ford produced 9,849 convertible examples with a base price of $3,426, while the two-door hardtop version saw nearly triple production at 28,107 units. The XL trim level added bucket seats, a floor-mounted shifter, and polished door panels with carpeted lower sections. Buyers received two keys (one for the trunk and glovebox, another for the doors and ignition) to facilitate valet parking.

Standard power came from a 289-cubic-inch V8 producing 200 horsepower, paired with a Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. Optional engines included a 390-cubic-inch V8 rated at 300 horsepower for $246 extra, along with higher-performance variants. Enthusiasts could also select the 427-cubic-inch Thunderbird Super High-Performance V8 delivering 425 horsepower. Curb weight was around 4,000 lbs (1,814 kg), depending on engine and equipment.
