1965 Ferrari 275 GTS

Ferrari replaced its long-running 250 GT platform at the 1964 Paris Salon with the new 275 series, featuring an enlarged Colombo-designed V12 now displacing 3.3 liters. The lineup consisted of two distinct models: Scaglietti’s race-oriented berlinetta and Pininfarina’s luxurious 275 GTS spider, each sharing mechanical components but differing dramatically in character and purpose.

Pininfarina’s open-top design drew inspiration from earlier Ferraris, incorporating a shorter hood, prominent oval grille, distinctive triple-louvered front fenders, and a neatly truncated tail that echoed classic Italian roadsters of the early 1960s.

Beneath the bodywork, the 275 GTS retained the berlinetta’s tubular Tipo 563 chassis, fully independent suspension with unequal-length wishbones, coil springs, and four-wheel disc brakes.

Power came from a 3.3-liter (3,285 cc) single-overhead-cam V12 (Tipo 213), rated at 260 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and paired with a rear-mounted five-speed manual transaxle (Ferrari’s first road car to use this layout for improved balance and handling).

Construction was handled at Pininfarina’s Turin facility, with steel body panels and aluminum components for the doors, hood, and trunk lid. All examples left the factory with Borrani wire wheels and a folding soft top, with an optional removable hardtop available.

Production ran from late 1964 through early 1966, totaling just 200 cars worldwide, including 19 right-hand-drive examples.

The 275 GTS served as the direct successor to the 250 GT Cabriolet and was replaced by the 330 GTS in 1966. Today it remains one of Ferrari’s most elegant open grand tourers, combining the refinement of Pininfarina styling with the mechanical sophistication of Ferrari’s first transaxle chassis.
