The Pennant-winged Nightjar is an African nightjar famous for the male’s incredibly long wing feathers, which can grow far beyond the length of its body. These elegant “pennants” are used in spectacular aerial displays to attract females, while the bird hunts moths and other flying insects at dusk with swift, silent flight. Outside the breeding season, the elongated feathers are shed, giving the male a much more ordinary appearance.
